When travelling to Ireland and Scotland in the autumn (and winter and spring), your packing list is going to be a wee bit different. Here's what our Dublin-based team recommends and suggests you include in your packing list for an Irish or Scottish autumn.

Wear This

A list of sensible staples to build your packing list off of.

→ A lighter, wind and rain proof jacket

You’re going to encounter some rain, but with Ireland and Scotland’s autumn weather being rather downright pleasant you’re more likely to come into contact with wind rather than rain during this season.

→ Jeans

The ever-versatile jeans. Dress them up, down and walk everywhere in them. Your tours will have outdoor components and whether you’re in the city or the countryside, you’ll want to be comfortable and ready to go.

→ Sweater

The name of the game is all about layers. A good sweater to keep the chill off, whether in day or night, that can be easily folded and tucked into a backpack is an absolute necessity nearly year-round.

→ Waterproof or washable shoes (with a good tread)

Off-season travel holds its own charms for cozy Celtic trips

While the Celtic Isles are known for Ireland’s glowing green shores and the heathered Highlands of Scotland, they’re also some of the best places to see autumn leaves. Brilliant fall foliage abounds in forests, along streams and throughout parks when you visit in the cooler off-season, after the height of tourist travel.

Killarney National Park

Ireland’s crown jewel for protected parklands puts on a grand show with some of the best autumn leaves. There’s 39 square miles of gorgeous hills, woods and iconic forested lakeside to explore. And, to add to the sense of autumn adventure, you can do more than hike this park. There is biking, electric bikes too, horse riding journeys and even a charming ride through the park in an open jaunting cart.

How was Giant’s Causeway created?

While geologists say Giant’s Causeway was formed by volcanic activity, the Irish locals have a different story to tell. According to legend, these columns are the remains of a causeway built by Irish giant, Finn McCool. It spanned the sea between the Emerald Isle and the shores of Scotland in preparation for an epic battle between Finn and Scottish giant, Benandonner.

The Story of Finn McCool

Across the sea, the Scottish giant Benandonner was threating Ireland so in retaliation Finn McCool started building a causeway so they could settle the score face-to-face. When Finn completed the ancient footpath, he traveled to Scotland and saw just how big Benandonner was in comparison to him so he decided to run home. When Benandonner followed him back, McCool’s wife disguised him as a baby in a blanket. This frightened Benandonner. He thought to himself, ‘if Finn’s baby is the size of a grown giant, how big must his father be?’ Thankfully, to Finn’s mischievous wife, Benandonner was scared off to Scotland forever and left Ireland alone.

Our very own Sarah Hamilton gave us the scoop (or in one case – the cone) on a few “Ireland Only” hidden gems to visit, try, taste and experience – but shhhhh! Don’t “Gab” it all around.

What's the key to unlocking hidden details of a trip to Ireland? Any local would say: bring an appetite for exploration, curious places and of course – favorite foods.

From Emerald Island magic, to friendly rivalries, to sweet treats and comforting foods, here’s some local advice to add into your next excursion to Ireland.

The Magic Hill

Call it mystery, call it gravity, call it a strange magnetism – whatever it is, the Magic Hill of Dundalk is a geographic oddity you must experience to believe. Out in County Louth things roll uphill, after they’ve already come down.

Park a car at the bottom of the hill, put it in neutral and take your foot off the brakes – then enjoy the ride up to the top, courtesy of the hill’s inexplicable pull.

When you’re done with the mystery, take to Ireland’s other hills. They’re all full of magic, no matter where you go, so get ready to roam!

The Champagne of breakfast rolls: The Blaa

We will gladly have a case of “The Blaa” when it’s this delicious.

Waterford is famous for more than its world-renowned crystal glassware’s: The region was once a refuge for fleeing French Huguenots, and they’re responsible for introducing the iconic, soft and white Blaa bread roll that changed Irish breakfasts entirely.

This fluffy and light carb is so particular to the region that, much like how true champagne is local to Champagne, France, you can only claim to have a real Blaa if you’re in Waterford.

Team Barry’s or Team Lyons – You decide

Want to start the friendliest fight you’ll ever have? Pick a tea team and see what happens. The most popular drink in Ireland (topping even our beloved Guinness) is a hot cup and the debate as to which everyday tea is best is fierce.

Brew it strong, brew it weak, cover in cream or sweetened to taste – there’s not a wrong (or perfectly right) way to take your tea.

Almost every hotel offers an afternoon tea service from high tea to an afternoon pick-me-up, so take a seat, pour a cup and cast your vote.

The humble “99 Cone” is an absolute staple of Irish ice cream treats, but you may never find it mentioned in a guide. Its Matterhorn-like white peak is topped with a jaunty Cadbury flake chocolate bar tipped off to the side.

The joy of a perfect little soft serve is no secret to anyone in Ireland, but because it’s such a common part of the sweets life, it might get overlooked in a guide. But don’t let its commonly found stature fool you – it’s something special.

Cashel Palace: Legend Has It

While the water for Guinness comes from the Wicklow Mountains, there’s an elegant legend circling the grounds of the Cashel Palace Hotel, care to know?

The rumor is that the humble, original spring for Ireland’s most famous brew (other than the tea we spilled earlier) was somewhere on this majestic property. Like we said, Ireland’s a nation of storytellers and some secrets are too good to be kept – but you can’t find out until 2021 when the Cashel Palace reopens its gates.

The task of pouring the perfect pint of Guinness may seem mundane, but similar to that of a marine sniper, there’s a science of precision that must take place in order to execute the perfect pour.

Step 1: Preparation is Key

The following 6 steps are pointless if you don’t start with a pristine foundation. Pick out a clean, dry, and Guinness embossed glass that is worthy to hold the liquid of which it is named after. Similar to any trustworthy sidekick, this glass will be the Robin to your Batman; the confidant that you entrust with the success or failure of the mission.

Step 2: Take Aim

Perched just above the famed Guinness logo is a golden harp. Let this symbol be the target for the Guinness beer to cascade down onto. In order to improve your chances of hitting the target, tilt the glass to a 45-degree angle (no more, no less). Once you have a confirmed visual on the target and have the glass in position... move on to step 3.

Step 3: Perfect Pour

You’ve made it halfway. You are now ready to execute arguably the most significant step in this entire mission. Without any sudden movements, grab hold of the beer lever. Once you’ve confirmed a solid grip, slowly bring the lever towards you. The liquid gold will start raining down on the golden harp and collect at the bottom of the glass. Continue to pour until the beer reaches the bottom of the golden harp. At that time, slowly tilt the glass to be vertical. Once the beer level reaches the top of the harp, slowly return the lever to an upright position.

Step 4: Wait an Irish Minute

This step mustn’t be skipped nor overlooked. Similar to the apple in the Garden of Eden, do not succumb to the temptation of continuing on to the next step until you have waited 119 seconds (no more, no less). This time allows for the beer to “surge”. This process allows the nitrogen carbonation to settle and to equally disperse itself throughout the pint. Step 5: Complete the Mission

After waiting for 119 seconds, you are now ready to complete the job. Center the glass directly underneath the tap and push the lever away from you. This slight adjustment will slow the flow of beer from the tap to ensure you do not disrupt the surge process from step 4. Once the beer peaks over the top of the glass, return the lever to vertical.

Step 6: Enjoy!

Congratulations or as the Irish say comhghairdeas (/koh-ghawr-jess/)! You have poured the perfect pint of Guinness. Now it’s time for the best part. Bring the pint up to your mouth and slowly drink the fruits of your labor. If you look closely you can see it smiling back at you.

Once Upon a Time…

All the old tales begin the same way, but truly, every path to love is different, as is every unique and loving couple. How Far Would You Go?

For Nicki and Anthony, their love had to cross the lengths and distances of… The Travel Corporation’s (parent company of Brendan Vacations) offices in bright and sunny California.

Matched by their mutual love of exciting travel, when it came time to consider just how to ask Nicki the question, Anthony called in the advice of Brendan’s very own Ireland Managing Director, Catherine Reilly.

From there, the two devised the ultimate romantic Ireland getaway: the intimate travel choice of Private Chauffeur and a stay at the beautiful Renaissance Era Dromoland Castle. Catherine suggested that Anthony plan the engagement near the beginning of the trip.

“Catherine and I thought this was best so we could then enjoy our time together as an engaged couple,” said Anthony. “It was perfect advice.”

While Nicki knew about the trip, the inter-office chatter was kept to an absolute quiet on the biggest part. This brings us to the other big question: What does the screeching of flying feathers with sharp talons have to do with love?

So glad you asked.

Like Birds of a Feather

Anthony and Catherine devised a romantic proposal moment to let the day’s love take flight.

Not everyone is a bird person, but…

“One thing I knew was that Nicki had enjoyed the falconry at Ashford Castle,” said Anthony. “So she has some experience, and she has a unique respect for animals.”

Anthony says there was, as with any magical moment, the momentary thought of “What COULD go wrong,” but the staff and falconer were so dedicated and calm it was priceless.

“They popped out just at the right time… and he asked Nicki if she wouldn’t mind helping train this bird,” said Anthony. “She was so focused; she didn’t even notice the ring dangling below till the falconer mentioned: What’s that the falcon brought back for you?“

Happily Ever After

For this happy couple, every deeply personally planned moment that followed heightened the joy of those first unforgettable experiences of the trip. From chauffeured adventures to Galway and the Game of Thrones sets to relaxing in front of their fire at the end of each day, there was no shortage of love to be found in Ireland for the start of their next chapter.

Where did the story go next? Well, the Nuzman’s got married this year, and have plans for adding a new, small character to the tale in 2022.

“This was such a great moment for the both of us. Her face was priceless and spoke a thousand words without speaking and I saw it all in those tears of joy. It was truly special.”

The man, the myths and legends of Ireland’s big day

St. Patrick’s Day is six months away… but who’s really counting? We at The Gab happen to sham-rock out for celebrating Ireland’s patron saint and of course, all things Ireland. We firmly believe it’s never the wrong time to get excited about Ireland.

But, here’s a fun fact: A lot of what we think we know about St. Patrick and his day is, well, not always on the correct road, so to Brendan-speak. Come on a journey with us as we chart a map to the facts and fictions about the man and the traditions of St. Patrick’s Day.

The Man

Ah yes, the legend himself. A towering figure of Ireland, the primary patron saint of the Emerald Isle and icon of the biggest international celebration of being (at least for the day) Irish. So who was he, really? Turns out St. Patrick – not actually Irish. British-born in the 4th century, he was kidnapped at age 16 and worked as an enslaved animal herdsman.

Upon escape and return to Britain he decided to go back to Ireland as a missionary after a dream, detailed in in one of his writings, Confessio. He’s credited for having widely spread the Christian religion to the Picts and pagan Ireland. There’s also something about snakes in there too, more on that coming up next.

You don’t have to go through the troubles of a saint to see the beauty of Ireland and Britain – we’ve got plenty of trips that take you to both.

The Myths

Corned beef and cabbage for Ireland? Never met her. Sure it’s a dish most people eat for St. Patrick’s, but mainly in non-Irish countries, mostly popularized in the United States as “traditional fare.” In Ireland herself, you’ll probably dine on dishes like shepherd’s pie, roast, or perhaps an Irish stew. Ireland’s food tours, like in Dublin or Galway give you a true taste of what’s on the menu. And of course, if you imbibe, let us remind you to not forget your Guinness or Jameson.

As for those snakes we mentioned earlier – St. Patrick’s big claim to fame is thought to have been driving all the snakes out of Ireland. Not quite what you think though – there’s never been any actual coldblooded creatures on Ireland’s craggy shores, rather, “snake” was an illustrative term referring to pagans.

The Legends

Nothing endures quite like a good story in Ireland, it is the nation of storytellers, after all. So here’s a few *gasp* shocking trivia notes about St. Patrick’s Day that have traveled from the realm of reality into the world of legend.

Green – it’s the Emerald Isle and the color of Ireland and CERTAINLY the color of St. Patrick…. Right? Not always as it turns out. His original color was blue, Ireland’s historic color of rule. Due to its association with British rule, blue became replaced by green, associated with the push for the Irish fight for independence.

What else is green in Ireland? it’s infamously gorgeous countryside – filled with the iconic shamrock. This tiny, three-leaved clover is just as lucky as its even numbered counterpart, and its symbolic meaning predates St. Patrick’s retooling as an evergreen example of the church’s trinity concept. Before him, it was a welcome symbol of the coming of spring.

While spring and St. Patrick’s Day are still a half a year away, we’re going to keep thinking about shamrocks and leprechauns (and our trips to visit them). Until the big day comes, sláinte!

When is the best time to go to Ireland? From celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, to cozying up to the winter months during the slow season, it’s always a great time to take a vacation to the Emerald Isle. No matter when you go, here’s our month-by-month guide to the best things to do in Ireland all year-round.

January

Our Nation of Storytellers is well-known for our superstitions, and we believe that the first person to walk through our doors on January 1^st can bring good luck. So, let us welcome you in and show you all the fun traditions we have to ring in the New Year, Celtic style.

February

There’s no better way to enjoy a romantic getaway than by spending Valentine’s Day in the home of its namesake, St. Valentine, himself. Although the actual history of St. Valentine has many different variations, his unparalleled belief in love, empathy and passion are always the common thread.

March

Cue the bagpipes. You’re in for a celebration that is worthy enough to be at the top of anyone’s bucket list. Everyone should experience St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland at least once in their life; and after you dance to the beat of the music in the streets, feel your heart illuminate when the cities light up in green, or taste the authentic corned beef and cabbage here… we’re sure you’ll be back for more.

Easter in Ireland is filled with many traditions from the practical to the peculiar. Just like in the States, we have Ash Wednesday ceremonies and visits from the Easter Bunny, but we also have a fun ritual called The Herring’s Funeral where local butchers give a symbolic goodbye to all the fish we’ve been consuming during the days of lent.

The weather’s getting warmer, the days are getting longer, spring flowers are starting to bloom and adorable fluffy lambs are jumping around the rolling green fields. Sounds amazing, right? May is the perfect combination for perfect temperatures and lesser crowds right before the peak of summer.

Planning a traditional June wedding? Why not invite your groomsmen and bride tribe to the destination wedding of a lifetime on the Emerald Isle. Then when everyone back home asks to see your wedding photos, you can amaze them with incredible pictures in front of ancient castles and majestic hillsides.

Europe is such a hot spot in the summer; literally. Those that have traveled to Italy or Greece during the peak season will tell you just how high their temperatures climb. In Ireland, we have milder weather than many of the other popular destinations so getting around is still a breeze, even in July.

August

Festivals and bonfires have been a pagan tradition in Ireland for centuries and continue to thrive; especially in August. This month marks the beginning of the harvest season and is celebrated with a tradition called Lughnasadh which is said to bring our people a bountiful year ahead.

September

Fewer crowds and better prices bring folks to the Emerald Isle this month. With kids back in school the local attractions are way quieter and have more availability. Plus, this is the time of year when the air turns a little crisper and the fires burn a little brighter.

October

Welcome to the land where Halloween began, except it looks a lot different in Ireland. Originally known as Samhain, it has many similarities as celebrations in the States, but dives deeper into the belief that this is the day spirits could roam the Earth. Bonfires ignite to ward off evil and turnips (not pumpkins) were carved out in order to carry a piece of the magic back; guiding the spirits home.

The Irish may not celebrate Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take advantage of your holiday vacation days with a trip to the Celtic Isles. This year, replace your traditional turkey dinner for something new. Irish stew or minced pie, anyone?

Christmas is a magical time anywhere you go, but the fairytale feeling you find in Ireland makes spirits brighter than ever before. From wandering the holiday markets (mulled wine in hand), to strolling through neighborhoods lit up with lights in every window, to attending midnight mass with the locals; this is one holiday you’ll never forget.
